Our hardworking class just completed their first story, “Thank You M’am”, by Langston Hughes. In the story, a boy of about fourteen, Roger, tries to steal a woman’s purse but winds up with more than he bargained for. Shared Inquiry, a method of reading and discussion led to our interpretive question: Why doesn’t Roger run away when Mrs. Jones turns him loose to wash his face?
Students were encouraged to think about trust and its role in their lives. What is trust? Why is it important? What helps it grow?
